Today I created a hipster index, called the GHI, for albums. A high GHI is characterized by a well-received album that isn't very popular. To calculate it, you need to know how many stars AllMusic gives it out of 5 (A), and how many bars of popularity on average it has on Spotify (B). Then, do this calculation:

GHI = 50 + 10A - (25/6)B

I've been having probably too much fun calculating these of a lot of albums. Some samples I've done:

Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns: 53
Atreyu - Lead Sails Paper Anchor: 61
Lady Gaga - Born This Way: 61
Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between: 66
Soulja Boy - souljaboytellem.com: 70
Dream Theater - Metropolis Part II: Scenes from a Memory: 71
Michael Jackson - Thriller: 75
Kamelot - The Black Halo: 83
Mew - Frengers: 83
Keith Fullerton Whitman - Multiples: 86
Dave Crowder Band - A Collision: 88
Squarepusher - Music Is Rotted One Note: 89
Dixie Dregs - What If: 91

A high GHI isn't automatically better than a low one, nor is it intended to be attached to the same negative stigma as the term "hipster" tends to have. But a high GHI is a good indicator of directions to move if you're trying to expand your musical horizons.

Yeah. Or just ask me. But Spotify is really cool so it's worth it.

Let's try my favorite Joy Electric album, "The Tick Tock Treasury"...

50 + 10(4) + (25/6)0 = 90! WOO!

And my 2nd favorite, "Robot Rock". 4 stars on AllMusic, no popularity on Spotify. Wow, same GHI!

Idiology by Mouse on Mars-- 94/95, depending on which upload you look at on Spotify-- is the highest GHMI for any album I own. Their earlier album, Instrumentals, is a straight-up 95.

if an album doesn't have an AllMusic rating, do I win?

Then you find the most mainstream rating you can find and convert it.

Can you do this one?

PWEI (Pop will Eat Itself) - Cure for Sanity. I don't have Spotify.

GHI = 50+10(4)+(25/6)(?)

Oh! And Wall of Voodoo - Seven Days in Sammytown.

GHI = 50+10(2.5)+(25/6)(?)

I just realized I accidentally said you add the number of bars when in reality you're supposed to subtract them. D'oh!

Cure for Sanity is an 85. Seven Days in Sammytown is a 69.

Thanks, Sleet.

Just curious; are the ratings on Allmusic and Spotify totally unbiased? I mean is it based on anything else besides frequency on listenership on either site, downloads and/or sales (current or YTD)?

I listen to all types of music (everything from Huey Lewis and the News to GWAR to Chopin to Elvis), and even real no-name bands that I got from the dollar store. Is your rating system to guide in the event you want something more mainstream or want to try something more obscure? I knew that there would be some disparity between the two I suggested, in fact I didn't realize PWEI would rate so high.

Spotify ratings are based on frequency of listening on Spotify. They roughly correspond to mainstream popularity. Allmusic ratings are just critical reviews. Obviously they're not entirely unbiased, but they roughly correspond to quality. Hence why this index is a rough measurement of how much an album has less popularity than it deserves. Vapid trash frequently gets low GHI scores and hidden gems frequently get high GHI scores. Within a certain margin of error, of course.

Oh, Sleeper - Children of Fire: 69

Am I a hipster yet? xD
