Self-Pity vs Sorrow

Hello. I have a question that I’d specifically like to have be between Christians. Specifically, Christians who are not part of LDS, JW, or Christian Nationalist/Identity movements.

How do we make a distinction between Self-Pity (a very bad sin that God despises) and Sorrow?

When I sometimes feel myself angry or sad, I just kind of cut that emotion off because it seems like Self-Pity but then it just bubbles up anyway.

I understand Self-Pity to mean anytime we feel sad about something happening to ourselves or anytime we wish something bad happening to us was happening or happened to someone else so basically anytime someone is experiencing sorrow towards themselves or their circumstances they’re experiencing Self-Pity.

Can someone who feels or perceives emotions in a relative way ever experience sorrow towards themselves that isn’t Self-Pity?

I am always aware that there’s people who have it much, much worse than I do, no matter what is happening in my life.

Since Examples seem to make a lot of sense to me:

Is a homeless and hungry man engaging in Self-Pity when he fails to care about a friend whose Sportscar was keyed and instead asks the friend for food? based on my understanding talking to Christian Furries the answer is “yes, and the homeless man deserves Hell for that” but my own answer is “I don’t think so”
